Where should a tracker sit on a steel boat?
A steel boat needs a better installation check than “the light is on”. Test the location before hiding the device away.
Start with the exact model
Read the manufacturer installation guide for the model and variant on the label. Check orientation, supply limits and environmental rating. A housing rating does not make every connector, cable join or installation waterproof.
Test reception with the cabin closed
Steel blocks and reflects radio signals. Choose a dry, secure location with the clearest practical sky view. Wait for a new GNSS fix and a separate mobile report. Check the original fix time rather than an old point on the map.
Make the supply safe
Use a suitable protected circuit and the specified fuse. Secure cables against chafing, moisture and accidental disconnection. Ask a competent marine electrician when the supply or isolation arrangement is unclear.
Prove the whole journey
Confirm a fresh report, verify a recipient and request an alert test. Check again after closing covers and returning the boat to its normal moored state. Record the model, installation date and safe device reference.
